Prof. Săftoiu graduated in 1995 in the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Craiova, followed by specializations in internal medicine and gastroenterology in 2000 and 2002, respectively. Prof. Săftoiu has received intensive training in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, with emphasis on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP), in several centers abroad, including University Hospital Aarhus and Gentofte University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark. Other clinical stages included telemedicine training of 4 months at the University of Maryland at College Park, USA, confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) training in Mainz, Germany, and a short-term observer visit in MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
Scientific activity included the publication of more than 100 papers in scientific journals, including 83 papers in journals indexed in Medline or ISI Web of Science, as well as 14 books, including 3 book chapters published in USA. The number of citations according to ISI Web of Science was around 300, while the Hirsch h-index (based on Google Scholar) was 14, cited on January 2012.

Prof. Săftoiu is member of several scientific societies, including European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), European Federation of Societies of Ultrasonography in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB), American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and American Gastroenterological Association (AGA).
